The “Wienerwald” is a forested highland in the west and south west of Vienna, characterized by changing geology (Flysch, limestone alps) and landscape morphology. The area will be introduced with respect to geology, soil formation, forest characteristics and historic development. 3 profiles within walking distance (appr. 2h walking time in total) will be presented to show the diversity of the soil and the pronounced influence of the dominating tree, the beech. The accumulation and transportation of litter as well as the specific phenomenon of tree runoff lead to pronounced effects with respect to soil formation and soil characteristics. This part of excursion will take place in the Schottenwald (still in the area of Vienna), start at 09:30 am and finish at appr. 15:00h. Participants who want to leave at this point will be guided to a nearby metro station. In the second part of the excursion, we will visit the village Perchtoldsdorf in the southern Wienerwald, which offers a nice loop from the market place (main square) to the pine forests (Pinus nigra) through vineyards. After the official end of the excursion at the market place, a walk and visit of local wineries will be offered (not included in the excursion fee).

A bus transport to and from the excursion sites will be organized, proper outdoor equipment and footwear is strongly recommended. A packed lunch will be provided.

For participants joining the walk and winery visit in Perchtoldsdorf, public transport back to Vienna is easily available.
